VTTA National Road Circuit Championship

Saturday 13^th May saw the first running of a VTTA road circuit championship in conjunction with the Leo 30 mile event organised by John Golder and the East Anglian VTTA. The Leo 30 has been a prestigious event for many years and there are lots of famous names of time trialling on the winner’s shield (pictured above) such as Alf Engers (3 times) Eddie Adkins, Martin Pyne, John Pritchard, Dave Eldridge, Michael Hutchinson, Matt Illingworth, Paul Bennett, Alan Rochford, and Vic Gibbons. Every current National CTT 30 miles competition record has gone in the Leo 30. It was in the 1991 event that Gary Empson & Eddie Adkins first broke the hour for 30 miles. For the past two years, the event has been a memorial event to Alan Rochford (Leo RC sponsor from 1990 to 2007) & Val Hester (Leo RC general secretary for many years) who both sadly died of cancer last year.

On the day there was a cold northerly wind, and the temperature didn't get much above 10 degrees. Riders had to cover two laps of a sporting triangular circuit course. Among the starters was ex-World Tour pro, Alex Dowsett, who kindly awarded the prizes.

Jack Levick won the George Hicks 'Leo 30' shield for the fastest ride. The VTTA championship results included both TT bikes and road bikes and the medal winners are shown below.

John Golder reports this first road circuit championship a great success and hopes the VTTA will continue to run it in future years.
