Competitive Cycling for Life ^
PREVIEW: The first of the VTTA’s National Championship events takes place this Sunday, with many of the country’s top over-40s heading to Scotland for the 10-Mile title race staged by Royal Albert CC.
Defending open champion Richard Oakes (Team Ohten Aveas) will ride again, as will another former national medallist, team-mate Mike Twelves, so they will provide some stiff competition for the large Scottish contingent.
Add in track masters world champion Alison Winship-MacKay, and Team Ohten Aveas could challenge for the team award.
2024 women’s champion, Linda Dewhurst is not defending her title leaving the way open for a new winner.
Legato Racing Team are sending a strong team of six riders including last year’s bronze medallist Deb Hutson-Lumb and Susan Semple to challenge for the female awards alongside Winship-MacKay. But keep an eye out for Edinburgh RC’s Liz Ball too.
The 'furthest travelled award' looks to go to Chris Dyason (East Anglian and Cambridge CC) who must be hoping the journey will result in him improving on last year's fifth place in the Open Championship.
There are 49 VTTA solo entries for the championship, with Scottish group members unsurprisingly dominating the field – a great opportunity for them to shine in a national championship without having to travel distances far to the south.
GTR-Return to Life provide several local riders who are very capable of fast times, such as Marc Anderson, Tony Scott and Joe Hands, but they are all in their forties and so will have to go full beans to challenge for the Age Adjusted Awards.
The event uses the WW10/03 course on the A78 dual carriageway from near Eglinton Country Park down to Meadowhead roundabout near Auchengate and back.
Awards will be given out on age adjusted times, with medals for the top three in the open and female categories, with the winners also receiving a championship jersey.
Team awards will also be made, to club teams where all three riders are first claim members of the same club, while there are also Group awards to teams of three who are in the same Group.
Tandem National Championship award will also receive gold medals, while the Ken Matthews Cup will go to the rider with the best age adjusted time regardless of whether they are in the open category or the female category.
To be eligible riders must be paid-up members of the VTTA at the closing date and have linked their online VTTA and CTT accounts.
